What to consider when installing a ball screw.

2023-01-05

Proper installation increases the ball screw’s lifespan. These are general guidelines – each machine should be considered individually.

1. Remove machine covers and clean thoroughly
2. Check before replacing the ball screw:

  • Is the lubrication working?
  • Is the screw clean?
  • Are the protective covers intact?
  • Are the screw and bearing units aligned?
  • Are the nut and bearing units firmly fastened?
  • Is there any play in the nut or bearings? (In some cases, replacing the bearings is enough)

3. Keep the new screw in its packaging until you’re ready to install
4. Mount and center the fixed side bearing
5. Always replace the bearing when you replace the screw
6. Tighten the locknut for the bearing
7. Mount the support bearing on the screw and insert it into the bearing housing
8. Ensure no dirt gets on the screw
9. Insert the nut into its housing and hand-tighten the screws
10. Secure the fixed side bearing (usually the drive side)
11. Move the table back and forth; stop it near the fixed side and tighten the locknut
12. Run the table again to check for misalignment and correct if needed
13. Tighten the support bearing
14. Check alignment again
15. Once everything looks good, verify all screws on the bearings and nut are fully tightened
16. Check that lubrication reaches the ball screw/nut
17. Finally, mount the motor and coupling
